A new protected area in south-eastern Madagascar: the culmination of ten years of Nitidæ’s work in the area!

The official handover of the decree granting temporary protected status to the Beampingaratsy Protected Area in the Anosy region of Madagascar took place in Antananarivo in the presence of the Presidency and members of the Malagasy Government.

This major milestone marks the culmination of a long process that began in 2013, with the TALAKY project and now TALAKY BE, which aims to reconcile the protection of 124,000 hectares of primary forest with the sustainable economic development of local communities.

This commitment to the area has also been accompanied by significant scientific research carried out by the N’Lab, Nitidæ’s R&D department, and its partners; and has resulted in a publication in a scientific journal.

Among the many initiatives implemented:

1. Spatial planning and territorial cohesion
2. Agricultural intensification and diversification
3. Landscape and forest restoration
4. Development of community infrastructures

With over 20 years’ experience in the region and a team of 90 staff, including around 30 eco-guards, Nitidæ is already fully committed to the next stages:

1. Granting permanent protected status to the Beampingaratsy Protected Area, which is home to exceptional biodiversity and numerous endemic species (flora and fauna)
2. Strengthening local development initiatives with local communities across 25 municipalities in the Anosy region through to 2030.

Current and future mapping, based on two IPCC scenarios, of the suitability of the environment as a habitat for a species of lemur. This work was presented, amongst other things, at an international scientific conference
