Main goals

Strengthening the sustainability of the cashew value chain in Africa

Component 1. Production of knowledge, sharing during policy dialogue sessions and technical assistance for the benefit of African cashew value chains

Component 2. Sustainable territory project for cashew on the outskirts of the Comoé National Park in Côte d'Ivoire

Specific objectives

SO1. Advise and strengthen African States in the definition of policies and in dialogue on the cashew sector
SO2. Support actors in the value chain and disseminate knowledge on the determinants of production
SO3. Analyze the social, environmental and quality impacts and issues in the cashew sector
SO4. Improve cashew production systems
SO5. Supervise marketing and promote a certified quality sector
SO6. Sustain territory management and community development of populations
SO7. Capitalization of the "Comoé Landscape" project through a comparative study at the sub-region level (Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana)

A1. Carrying out a study and producing knowledge on the African cashew value chains
A2. Participation and animation in consultation workshops and sharing during political dialogue sessions
A3. Definition of a strategy for stakeholders in the cashew sector
A4. Rehabilitation and revitalization of cashew orchards
A5. Integrated support for agricultural production systems
A6. Supervision of cashew producer groups on marketing
A7. Establishment of a market information dissemination network
A8. Promotion of “organic farming” labeling for the cashew sector
A9. Contribution to the drafting and validation of PDLs for beneficiary villages
A10. Training for local management committees (CDL)
A11. Partial financing of infrastructure identified by the PDL
A12. Strengthening conservation stakeholders (awareness raising and training)
A13. Strengthening awareness and dialogue on sustainable resource management and social cohesion among populations

Jean-Baptiste Roelens

Holder of a master Tropical environment and Biodiversity, he worked for 3 years in French Guyana, notably as forest ecology and soil science research officer at CIRAD. From 2008 to 2016 he worked at the WWF in Madagascar, France and Democratic Republic of Congo as Forest and Climate program manager. At WWF, he supported conservation, forest landscape restoration and REDD+ projects, he also conducted campaign and advocacy work on forest policies and energy infrastructure development. He joined Etc Terra - then nitidæ - in May 2016 as MOZBIO project manager around the Gilé national reserve in the Zambézia province in Mozambique.

Odilon Chambers

As a geographer, specializing in rural development, he has been based in West Africa since 2016. First stationed in Mali on behalf of Luxembourg cooperation, he then joined the team in 2021. Hands-on man, he coordinates agricultural activities in the north of Côte d'Ivoire around cashew-food production systems, forest resources (shea), product labeling as well as environmental conservation around the Comoé National Park. It is also involved in specific studies on value-chain, traceability and marketing
