Role in the project
Component implementation

Countries

Côte d’Ivoire Mozambique Tanzania Uganda

Fields

Sectors

Cocoa Coffee Cashew

Main goals

To help support the transition to agroecology and agroforestry in the cashew, cocoa and coffee sectors in West and East Africa, by promoting the adoption of shared principles and sustainable practices

Beneficiaries

  • 3,000 producers or cooperative members involved in the roll-out of agroecological and agroforestry systems
  • National authorities and value chains regulation institutions
  • Producers’ organisations and agricultural cooperatives
  • Value chains private stakeholders
  • National action-research organisations

Results

This objective is broken down into three outcomes (deliverables)
R1.
Agroforestry systems (AFS) based on cashew, coffee and/or cocoa are characterised as drivers of transition, in line with the objectives, constraints and strategies of stakeholders in the value chains, including those in the timber sector and the Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) sector
R2.
Agroecological production systems based on cashew nuts, coffee and/or cocoa, developed in collaboration with stakeholders, are designed in accordance with the principles of agroecology, and then adapted and rolled out across a variety of landscapes, in line with local socio-ecological contexts
R3.
The governance of the value chains is being improved and multi-stakeholder forums for dialogue are being strengthened to support collective efforts towards agroecology and agroforestry

Nitidae contributes to R1. and leads the implementation of R2. through its field teams in Côte d’Ivoire, Uganda, Tanzania and Mozambique

R2. aims to co-design, test and disseminate diversified, ecologically intensive agroforestry and agroecological systems that are adapted to local contexts, across several pilot areas

Activities

A1. Scoping and strategic direction
Preliminary field missions to meet with institutional and private-sector stakeholders, carry out initial territorial analyses and define the broad strategic directions for the SATAF initiative in each territory
A2. Participatory landscape diagnosis
Analysis of landscape dynamics through spatial analysis and socio-economic surveys to characterise production systems – particularly those for coffee, cocoa and cashew nuts – their constraints, and the potential for introducing agroecological practices and agroforestry systems
A3. Co-design and dissemination of agroecological practices and agroforestry systems
Based on the findings of the landscap diagnosis and supplementary surveys (including analyses of farming practices), agroecological innovations and agroforestry systems tailored to each area and type of producer will be tested on pilot plots in collaboration with networks of trialling producers. This will enable the validation of technical protocols and operational agroecological systems adapted to local contexts
A4. Capacity-building and regional coordination
Organising multi-stakeholder workshops, producing technical resources and providing training for technicians, cooperatives and producers to support the adoption of jointly developed agroecological practices and systems
A5. Circular economy
Identifying and testing solutions for the valorisation of by-products from agricultural value chains to enhance the sustainability of agricultural and food systems
A6. Monitoring, evaluation and valorisation
Establishment of a monitoring and evaluation framework, including baseline and end-of-project measurements, in order to document transition pathways and share lessons learnt
